Fighting Censorship of Love in the Library
Love In The Library, a beautiful and wistful children's book by Maggie Tokuda-Hall about love blossoming between her grandparents at the library at Minidoka War Relocation Center. Based on a true story, Love In The Library speaks to the power of love and the power of books during difficult times. Illustrated by Yas Imamura, the muted colors, tilted perspectives, and retro feel transports the reader to Minidoka.
Scholastic Books offered to sell Tokuda-Hall’s book, Love in the Library, but they asked her to remove the word racism and any reference to it in the author’s notes. Scholastic Books has since backed down; however, Tokuda-Hall has refused in protest.
