Puyallup Remembrance Gallery

The Puyallup Valley JACL is creating a remembrance to honor the individuals of Japanese descent who were imprisoned during WWII, on the Sthen Puyallup Fairgrounds. They came from Alaska, Seattle and rural areas of Pierce County and were incarcerated in the largest temporary concentration camp in Washington State. Most were later removed to Minidoka in Idaho.

The WA State Fair has provided the Chapter an opportunity to build a permanent historic exhibit which will include listing the 7,600 names and interpretive displays. It will be seen by millions of people who visit the fairgrounds for events throughout each year. This project will help highlight the social injustices experienced and allow comparisons to those being denied justice today.

The gallery will use “The Puyallup Assembly Center” as a reflection of other assembly centers, temporary detention centers, and the ten permanent camps. The stories shared will mirror the specific but common aspects of incarceration.

The target date for opening is March/April 2024.
